Is a Business internship in Mexico right for me?

Are you a student looking for practical work experience in a business environment? Are you interested in getting that experience in different country? Then our Business internship in Mexico is for you!

You’ll work with professionals in one of several different areas, from finance to marketing. You’ll have a supervisor who’ll treat you like a member of the company. This is a great way to add hands-on work experience to your CV, and actively learn about the day-to-day work of a business. Your internship will also give you interesting points to talk about in an interview or application.

You don’t need any previous experience or qualifications to join. Your supervisor will teach you what you need to know, and they’ll guide your work. You can also reach out to Projects Abroad staff for advice and help whenever you need it.

However, you do need to be at least 17 years old and speak basic Spanish to join. If you need to brush up on your Spanish skills, we strongly recommend doing our Spanish Language Course before starting your internship.

This internship runs throughout the year, and you can join at any time. You’ll need to stay for at least four weeks. We encourage you to stay longer to learn and gain more business work experience while in Mexico.

What will I be doing on this project?

At your Business placement in Mexico, you will be working alongside local professionals at a consulting firm. Your tasks will include:

  • Assist consultants with cases and help review documents
  • Learn about Mexican business and culture while working
  • Improve your Spanish and even take a language course

Your work will focus on the following areas:

Assist consultants with cases

From your very first week on the job, you’ll be gaining first-hand business experience by helping local consultants with their cases. These are hugely varied and clients can include:

  • Private companies
  • NGOs
  • Various government departments

If you have any specific field of interests, you can mention this to the firm. They might just have projects for you to work on that match your interests exactly!

Learn about Mexican business and culture

Our Business internships in Mexico offer you an invaluable opportunity to gain insight into the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities of doing business in a developing country. You’ll also develop your personal skills, like communication and planning, and prove your adaptability by interning abroad. Having this as a frame of reference will no doubt help you stand out from the crowd on an application or during an interview.

Improve your Spanish

For this project, you do need to speak basic Spanish. Most of your colleagues at the firm and their clients will be speaking Spanish throughout the day. Understanding what you hear will help you to keep up and communicate. This is a great opportunity for you to take your Spanish to the next level, and practise speaking as much as possible.

Where will I be working in Mexico?

Guadalajara

As a Business intern, you will be based in the city of Guadalajara in the Western-Pacific area of Mexico. It’s the 10th largest city in Latin America in population, area, and gross domestic product. It is also a strong business and economic centre in the Bajio region.

You will work at a consulting firm. Your role will include reviewing documents, process analytics, and standards implementation. Because we want you to gain as much as possible, the work you do during your internship can be tailored to your specific interests.

Apart from this, Guadalajara is also considered to be the cultural heart of Mexico. It is also the birthplace of mariachi music. It’s home to some truly spectacular architecture and a very lively art scene. So be sure to save some energy for exploration after hours!

Airport pickup, flights and visas

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Mexico Arrival Procedures page.

Measuring our impact

Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.

Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.

Leisure activities and free time

With beautiful beaches, arresting art galleries, and buzzing restaurants, there’s something for everyone in Mexico. You’ll have plenty to do during your free time on your project in this dynamic country.

There’s something captivating about touring through old buildings. If you’re into neo-gothic architecture, treat yourself to a trip to the Templo Expiatorio del Santisimo Sacramento. It’s a work of art with its ornate steeples and glowing stained glass windows.

There are also plenty of museums, giving you the chance to immerse yourself in the country’s rich history. For something different, you can spend the day appreciating the wildlife and lush vegetation of Las Peñas Ecological Park.

You can’t take a trip to Mexico without tasting authentic Mexican cuisine. You can spend an evening enjoying pozole or tamales at a local restaurant and watching the vivid orange-red sun melt into the horizon.

We have a host of different projects in Mexico so there’ll likely be lots of other volunteers in the area during your trip. So you can choose to travel and explore in a group or on your own.
